History

The vision for California Recycles goes back to 2003 when the company’s founder, Elham Ebiza, first became interested in finding a solution to the challenges we face in recovering and recycling electronics. As a senior executive in the wireless industry, she was well aware of how quickly large amounts of electronics could become outdated and ultimately – disposable. This experience and behind the scenes understanding of the components contents, she learned that the industry had no plans to offer voluntary recycling of cell phones. After six months of study and networking with environmental groups such as “Citizens Against Waste”, Elham contacted Fran Pavely (D – State Legislature – check title/etc) and was highly supportive of Ms. Pavely’s efforts to pass stricter legislation regulating the disposal of electronics and cell phones. The end result of Ms. Pavely’s effort was the State of California’s legislation “The Cell Phone Recycling Act of 2005”. This legislation, coupled with state mandated take back programs.
